Saul Bass

Saul Bass was best know for his designs on motion pictures title sequence which is thought of as the best work ever seen.
I really like this title sequence because the way it is sectioned off into six parts and the way he has made the typography look as if it is moving. He has used a good pallet of colours as red and black complament one another and stand out. This is another piece of work which helped me to decide only to use two colours because I think this works really well.

Futurist

This book examines the rise and evolution of the futurists approach to typography and graphic design, placing it within the context of conteporary artistic and literarcy movement.
I really like this image as it has a good use of colours which all complament one another but what I like most of all is the way the typography changes colour when it goes into black block. I also like the composition of the typography as it is separated and is easy to read, the different sizes of type also work well. This had an affect on my work as I have also incorporated different size typography in my work.

Posy Simmonds

British cartoonist, writer and illustratior of childrens books Posy Simmonds, is best known for her long association with the Gaurdian. I like the way she has drew in black and white and added no colour, the drawing mainly consists of lines which create the image which I think makes the black and white work well alone with out any colour. I have not used any of her ideas in my work.

El Lissitsky

El Lissitsky's 2 squares is a short picture book for childrens its also one of the most powerfull expressions of revolutionay communism and modern art. I really like the idea of it being very simple this is also bold which makes it stand out. This hasn't had any affect on my work as my work just consists of typography. But I have only used two colours in my work the same as El Lissitsky.

Paul Davis

Paul Davies' Us & Them is a humorous book with two fronts, on one side you'll find his devilish caricatures of britons, each responding to the questions posed in the title. Flip it over and you'll find Americans giving their takes on Brits. I like the covers for this book because they are only simple drawings but yet effective the same as the typography. I like the use of the black pen because then the colours in the flags stand out. I think it is a great idea to have two front covers it is different to other books. This booklet did not have any affect on my work.

Neville Broady

Neville Broady, The British designer and art director, has now been at the fore front of graphic design for over 2 decades. He made his name largely through his revoltionary work as art director for the face magazine 1981-1986. I like the way Broady has put the typography verticaly and also horizontaly I think this magazine cover works really well because of the less use of colour the colours work well together and stand out which is what you want on a magazine cover.

Edward Tufte

Edward Tufte writes, designs and self publishes his books on analylical designs. His most recent book Beautiful Evidence is filled with hundreds of illustrations from the worlds of art and science and also charts, maps and graphs. His informaton becomes art. I like the way the photo has been taken of the dog jumping in the air because the movement makes it look more interesting because of the smudges. This image had no affect on my work.

Chris Ware

Chris Ware's "Jimmy Corrigan The Smartest Kid On Earth" is a widely acclaimed graphic novel published in 2000. This character has appeared in other Ware comic strips. I am not too sure on this image as I can not tell what it is but I do like the way the drawings are done in blocks and the image cuts off, then another one starts in the other block. This image had no affect on my work.

David Carson

Raygun was an American alternative rock n roll magazine, first published in 1992. Raygun created boundaries on cutting edge of magazine publishing by abandoning the usual conventations of headlines, columns and page numbers, not always readable but usually vivid appearance. I really like this image as it is very busy and has a good use of colour. I like the way the typography goes off the page and the different type of typography used together. This image inspiered me to use different compostions for the typeography in my booklet for example; to make it a little harder to read.

Edward Gorey

Edward Gorey's work defies easy classification he is described as an illustrator. His combination of words and pictures has led some to characterise him as having been a cartoonist. others see him as a writer who drew or an artist who wrote. I really like the cover of this book as it shows you all different designs of typography, this makes me want to experiment more with type. This shows by using different types of typography together can really work. This cover had great affect on me as I decided to use typography in my work.

The Designers Republic

Designer's republic designd a line of five collectable coca cola bottles called magnificent 5 or m5. The coca cola bottles are printed with designs in ultraviolet ink. I think the designs of m5 are really good as they are very decrotive and bright. They have limited there colours to three and they work very well together. They are very different to other bottles of drink as others just have mostly one bold colour and the name of the drink. I think the m5 bottles work better than ordinary drink because they attract your eyes to the bottle which makes you want to buy them. By looking at these images I changed the colours in my booklet to two colours only as I think less colours work much better together.
